Imitate the Imitators

Reflection 21 from Matters of the Heart

“Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.” – 1 Corinthians 11:1

There is not enough honour, or sufficient esteem, that we who are sojourners on this earth can bestow upon the victors who have reached their journey’s end. These godly men and women are the beams of light paving the narrow way and the difficult path leading to heaven. This is why the Church praises and commemorates the saints all year round.

But these remarkable warriors who have fought and won in this worldly arena are not to be merely praised and set before us on a pedestal. Rather they are to be our models in the Christian life. They are to be our closest companions, our teachers and our guides. And we must endeavour to study their lives, and imitate them in their faith, wisdom, witness and commitment to the Lord.

‘Let us steadfastly contemplate those who have perfectly ministered to His excellent glory.’- St Clement of Rome
