Unto Us a Child is Born

Reflection 53 from Matters of the Heart, a series of Orthodox reflections on faith and life.

‘Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.’ – Isaiah 9:6

Psalm 95 (96): 11-13

Not just any child, not merely a prophet, nor a man of God, but the very Son of God is born unto us this day. Prior to this moment in time, God must’ve seemed out of reach, infrequently manifesting Himself to mankind and speaking on occasion through messengers and prophets. But now God could be found amongst us, Emmanuel is in our midst! Our Hope was incarnate, and our Maker became Man.

Let us not delay in welcoming into our cluttered hearts Him who was born in a ragged manger. Let us revere our Wonderful Newborn, for in Him alone are we born anew. Let us honour our Mighty Saviour, who came to bear our sins upon His shoulders. And let us receive our Prince and Counselor, who suffered greatly in order to replace our sorrows with unsurmountable peace.

Christ is born! Rejoice and make haste to receive Him!

Prayer

My Lord who was born in Bethlehem, may you likewise find rest within my ragged heart.
