Struggle Against Evil Thoughts

One of the hardest battles that we as Christians fight is the one waging on inside our heads. The enemy is constantly attacking, trying to win some ground and take possession of our thoughts; for if our thoughts are captured, the enemy easily advances to wage a war against the remainder of our being.

This is why St Macarius the Great instructs us to engage every thought that enters our mind, and to determine its source, lest it be from the devil. We must struggle to ensure that all our thoughts are well-pleasing to God. Any thought which does not please God must be stopped dead in its tracks, since allowing the devil into our minds puts at risk the greatest possession of our hearts; the presence of our Lord and Savior.
